They say change is inevitable. But unexpected change often leads to cost over-runs and missed deadlines. This is especially true for engineering professionals managing critical projects. Change itself isn’t the problem. Engineers thrive on change and are constantly innovating and improving the systems and tools we use each day. But unplanned, unexpected change is a hassle that most of us would rather avoid. We work with our clients to minimize this sort of disruption. As engineers ourselves, we get why this is important. When a problem has already been solved, stability with the solution allows us to focus on tackling other, often bigger issues. With this in mind, we want to take an opportunity to share a story that shows how seriously we take this. It also demonstrates how closely we work with our suppliers and our clients to deliver product stability. One of our clients has been ordering a standardized custom system since 2012. We have sold over 22,000 of these systems, and until recently all have been housed in the Inwin BK623.BN300TBL Micro-ATX Chassis. This case was an important and operationally critical part of the system. To ensure stability we worked with Inwin to guarantee that supply of this model was available for well over a decade. That's a long time for any computer component! But eventually, it became clear that a change would be necessary, since this chassis was reaching end-of-life. So, what did we do? What we always do! We communicated with the client early, and prepared them for upcoming changes, in a way they could plan and prepare for. We identified suitable alternatives, including the eventual replacement chassis, and gave the customer the opportunity to perform rigorous testing. This involved a lot of discussion and planning with Inwin, as well as internally to ensure that the new configuration would deliver the needed results. Then we managed the transition to the new chassis in production. The Inwin CP712.CQ450TB3 is also a Micro-ATX chassis, but with some new advantages for the client. These include an improved fan design, a larger power supply, and of course ongoing availability for what we hope will be another decade or so!
