Client: University of Texas at Austin
Project: 3U with LCD

  • Customer requested 3U chassis as short as possible, in the 12 to 15 inch range.
  • Required built-in 7in touchscreen, three 3.5” bays for removable SSDs, an optical drive, and two eSATAp ports on the front panel.
  • We generated several layout sketches highlighting the benefits / tradeoffs of each
  • Customer agreed on one that would minimize noise with a larger 120mm fan and still allow 3 removable bays
  • Designed a fully custom chassis only 13 inches deep to meeting all the criteria
    • Integrated 7in Touchscreen LCD with front panel controls
    • Full size ATX board
    • Small form factor SFX power supply
    • Large quiet recessed 120mm intake fan
    • Optional rear exhaust fans
    • Two eSATAp ports on front panel
    • Slimline optical bay
    • Three 3.5in bays
    • Additional brackets for internal storage
    • Removable 3U rack brackets for alternate mounting
  • Chassis was designed to work as a 3U Rackmount, a desktop, or as a tower case
  • Featured an anodized aluminum bezel with radiused window and tab design
  • Contrasting black steel inlay serves as LCD bezel and 8mm hex grill for fan intake
  • Recessed fan allows quieter operation, an overlapping power switch, and better airflow
  • LCD mounting bracket incorporates mounting for controller boards, digitizer, and cable routing
  • Five flush steel buttons mate with the OSD tactile switches
  • Light Pipe reroutes status LED alongside buttons
  • Lid interlocks in six places for easy access with just one screw
  • Generated detailed renderings and detail drawings for customer’s presentation
  • Produced, assembled, and tested six prototype units ahead of the larger production order
